Underground trains for the mobility transition

Berlin’s public transport company, the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), is raising the bar in terms of urban mobility with the introduction of their tailored underground train carriages. Developed specifically for the unique requirements of Berlin’s historic underground system, we are presenting two innovative vehicle types: The JK series, which was designed for narrower lines with a small profile, and the J series, which is tailored to the wider lines with a large profile.

The JK series consists of modular two- or four-carriage vehicles that can be efficiently combined to form six- or eight-carriage trains. The J series, on the other hand, consists of a combination of end and intermediate carriages that can be coupled to form two-, four- and six-carriage configurations.

All of the new carriages feature large, barrier-free entrance areas that allow for speedy passenger boarding and alighting. The clever multifunctional zones offer plenty of space for passengers with reduced mobility, while the bright interiors convey a feeling of safety. A modern passenger information system provides intuitive, quick guidance in real time.

The BVG and Stadler have agreed on a scope of delivery of up to1 500 carriages, making it the largest vehicle procurement in the history of the BVG. With 376 carriages ordered on a fixed basis and a large number of identical trains, this agreement will significantly increase compatibility within the fleet and therefore also the flexibility of railway operations. In addition, Stadler will be supporting this milestone by supplying spare parts for a period of 32 years.

Visit us at InnoTrans, where Stadler will present a two-part carriage set from the JK series. This 25.5-metre-long set is fully accessible and offers 28 seats and space for 114 standing passengers. With a drive power of 540 kW and a maximum speed of 70 km/h, it is raising the bar in terms of performance and efficiency.
